SUMMARY:First Nations Governance Roundtable October 2026
DESCRIPTION:PGO’s First Nations Governance Roundtable provides a dedicated space for First Nations police governance representatives and partners to connect\, share experiences and discuss the opportunities and challenges shaping police governance in their communities. \nThe Roundtable is designed around conversation and shared learning. Participants are encouraged to bring forward the issues they are navigating\, exchange practical experiences and identify areas where stronger relationships\, additional resources or greater clarity may support their governance work. \nThese conversations also provide an important opportunity for PGO to listen and learn. Rather than assuming that existing governance approaches or resources will meet the needs of First Nations Boards\, the Roundtable helps identify where resources can be adapted\, where different approaches may be required\, and where tools and supports can be developed collaboratively. \nTopics will evolve based on the priorities and experiences of participants\, including governance roles and relationships\, Board development\, transitions and emerging governance issues. \nThe goal is to strengthen connections\, learn from the knowledge and experience already present within First Nations police governance\, and create opportunities to build practical supports together.

SUMMARY:October Board Member Discussion Group Day Session
DESCRIPTION:PGO’s Board Member Discussion Group provides an informal forum for police board members to connect with colleagues from across Ontario and have candid conversations about the realities of police governance. \nSessions explore current and emerging governance issues\, Board responsibilities\, legislative and regulatory developments\, practical challenges\, and the decisions Boards are navigating in their communities. \nThe format is intentionally conversational. Participants are encouraged to bring questions\, share experiences\, challenge thinking and learn from how other Boards are approaching similar issues. \nThese sessions are not simply about understanding what good governance looks like. They are an opportunity to consider how Boards can put that understanding into practice\, strengthen their effectiveness and continue moving from oversight to meaningful governance impact. \nWhether you are an experienced Board member or relatively new to police governance\, the Discussion Group provides a space to learn from one another\, test ideas and take practical insights back to your Board table. \nRegistration Link

SUMMARY:AI Virtual Summit
DESCRIPTION:Artificial intelligence is moving quickly from something we talk about to something organizations and individuals are already using. \nFor police Boards\, that raises some important questions. \nWhat exactly is AI? \nWhat do Board members actually need to understand about how it works\, what it can do\, where it can go wrong\, and why human judgment and critical thinking still matter? \nWhere is AI already being used in policing? \nAs police services explore and adopt AI-enabled technologies\, Boards need to understand enough to exercise meaningful governance and oversight. \nWhat should Boards know about the technologies being used by their police service? What questions should they be asking? What are the implications for privacy\, accountability\, bias\, policy\, risk\, transparency and public trust? \nBoards do not need to become technology experts. \nThey do need to know how to govern organizations that are increasingly using technology they may not fully understand. \nAnd then there is another question. \nWhat about AI around our own Board tables? \nBoard members and administrators increasingly have access to powerful AI tools\, sometimes through applications they already use. \nAre individual members already using AI to research issues\, summarize information\, prepare for meetings or develop their thinking? \nAre documents or information being entered into AI tools without a clear understanding of privacy\, confidentiality or information-security implications? \nAre AI-generated answers being independently verified? \nCould AI be influencing Board discussions or decisions without anyone knowing it was used? \nAnd has your Board ever discussed what responsible AI use should look like? \nBefore we ask how AI can help us govern better\, we need to understand how it may already be affecting our governance and what appropriate guardrails should be in place. \nOnly then can we explore the opportunity. \nUsed responsibly\, AI has the potential to help Boards work with information\, undertake research\, prepare for meetings\, identify better questions\, test assumptions and increase their capacity to govern. \nBut AI cannot exercise governance for us. \nIt can increase our capacity to govern. It cannot assume our responsibility to govern. \nJoin us on November 25.\nPolice Governance Ontario is bringing these conversations together for a full-day virtual summit dedicated to AI and police governance. \nWe will start with the fundamentals and build from there: \nUnderstand it.\nWhat is AI and what do governors actually need to know? \nGovern it.\nWhere is AI being used in policing and what does meaningful oversight look like? \nLook inward.\nHow might AI already be used around our own Board tables\, and what risks does that create? \nEstablish the guardrails.\nWhat policies\, practices\, training and expectations should Boards consider? \nUse it well.\nHow can AI responsibly support stronger and more effective governance? \nWhether you are already using AI regularly\, have only experimented with it\, or aren’t entirely sure what all the fuss is about\, this Summit is being designed to meet you where you are and move the conversation forward. \nThe objective is not to turn Board members into AI experts. \nIt is to help us become better prepared governors in an environment that is changing quickly. \nFor now\, we’re asking you to do one thing:\nHold the date.\nWednesday\, November 25\, 2026\nPGO AI & Police Governance Virtual Summit\nFull Day | Virtual \nA full program of speakers\, sessions and practical learning will be announced over the coming weeks. \nRegistration information coming soon.
