SUMMARY:Board Member Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:The PGO Board Member Discussion Group is a recurring virtual session designed for Police Service Board members to explore their role\, responsibilities\, and impact in a practical\, peer-supported environment. \nThese sessions focus on what it means to govern\, not just comply. They create space for board members to step back from meeting cycles and consider how their decisions\, questions\, and oversight contribute to effective police governance. \nThe discussion is grounded in real board experience across Ontario and reflects the evolving expectations under the Community Safety and Policing Act (CSPA). Participants are encouraged to engage openly\, test their thinking\, and learn from the perspectives of other board members navigating similar challenges. \nThis is not formal training. It is an opportunity to build confidence\, strengthen judgment\, and develop a clearer understanding of how governance shows up in practice. \nWho Should Attend: \n\nPolice Service Board Members\nBoard Chairs and Vice-Chairs\nNewly appointed and experienced members\n\nWhat to Expect: \n\nPractical discussion on the role of the board in governance\, oversight\, and accountability\nExploration of common challenges\, including decision-making\, boundaries\, and board dynamics\nInsight into how governance differs from operational involvement\nPeer exchange of approaches\, questions\, and lessons learned\n\nWhat Makes This Discussion Group Different: \n\nDesigned specifically for Police Service Board members\nFocused on governance thinking\, not just legislative requirements\nEncourages open\, experience-based discussion across boards\nSupports ongoing development beyond initial orientation or training\n\nSchedule:Held monthly (see event calendar for dates) \nTime:12:00 – 1:30 PM \nRegistration:Free to attend. Registration is required. Register Here
